#Journaling to beat tasks, #procrastination and #depression

They're known by many terms.

Art Journals - Travelers Notebook - Bullet Journals - Dot Journal...

A memory comes to me occasionally of my mother saying she found it curious that I always had a pen in my hand as if it was waiting for something to write… she never knew I became an author but I’ve journaled for many years. It did seem as if words just needed to flow from my fingers...
Last week I retired the planner I’ve used for the last six months and did an assessment of my new process as a management tool. I was actually amazed by how much I’d accomplished this year so far and I credit this particular notebook method.
Years ago, I used to carry a Day Runner Purse keeping everything in it with me - addresses, plans, to dos, finances, ideas - I called it my “bible to myself” so when I discovered bullet journals/travel notebooks and art journaling, I jumped into it whole hog.
After researching sizes, I decided on the most flexible one for me that will accommodate most 5x8” notebooks. I ordered a pretty forest green leather notebook cover (the basis for a travel notebook) from Galenleather.com. A bullet journal on the other hand can be created in any notebook that lies flat like some of the ones I show further down.
In my first attempt, I set up a travel notebook style planner with individual notebooks I made myself for various tasks, a separate one for finances, calendar, book notes, etc. The individual items are banded into the cover and can be removed for entry if needed or reordered. But after two months I ditched the many separate notebooks and went with a Popper and dollar store monthly calendar and this round, a bound daily journal.
I’ve included some images of some of my messy pages, some of my notebooks, supplies and calendar styles. One of my favorite calendars is the one with the circle calendar in the center and boxes for each month around it which allows me to put main focus in the center and more detail in the boxes. The detail book tasks page has been very helpful lately.
And I love my quote page which holds some of the quotes that inspire me. (Here’s one of my favorites, a quote my grandson shared with me when he was in the Navy.)

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”  Mark Twain

Don’t worry if you don’t want to decorate it, though there’s some real benefits to the creative energy that comes from it, or that your penmanship is well…ugly. That is not the point.
The core strength of these bullet journals/traveler’s notebooks/art journals/daily planners – whatever you choose to call them – is the intention that’s brought to the effort, the concentration on tasks, to dos, ideas, the tracking of daily life, goals set and met.
You identify a task or reminder, write down your intention to commit, to attend, achieve or remember, add goals or a date for that task – examples: pay off credit card by___, meals planned for one week, edits done for four books by June 30 at 8000 words per day, etc.
In Smart Journaling by Mackenzie Read, this expert says, “Distraction takes a heavy toll on productivity… Smart journaling gives the mind room to think.”
I was excited when I started this so I bought supplies – washi tape, rubber stamps, stencils, fancy card stock to make my own notebooks, a um, paper cutter, yeah… well, you don’t have to do that either. You can start with any style notebook that will open flat. I’ve shown a couple below. As you can see I could use just about any notebooks of that size as they fit into my cover. The important thing is to find one that opens flat to be the most useful and available (Something you like that’s practical so you will use it is essential).
Why it works! When I started the big revamp of my contemporary series in February I set goals in my planner each day. I had to have 2 books written and 5 books revised and edited by June 30. So, each day I place that item on the top of my planner page, total to be revised, number of pages to be edited for each day and a report of how many I’d accomplished. Now I have a new total to be transferred to the next day. I’ve included samples of my messy pages. The point is messy or not, this system works, because it’s customizable, personal, tuned to your personal needs to accommodate school, work, finances, writing, kids’ activities, whatever. You build it so you can follow it and as you can see I’ve tried many different styles of weekly, daily and monthly pages. It doesn’t cost me anything to try something new because I create it myself. This can all be accomplished with just a decent black pen like a sharpie fine line that doesn’t go through paper and a notebook.
This year, not only did I run my business during the day but in the mornings and between customers this system helped me to stay focused on my goals – personal, financial and writerly. I’ve used several different weekly and daily methods…
I finished rough drafts of two books, edited and completely revised 5 books, took three courses, learned how to create covers. If I stay on track I will have released 8 books by the end of the year and written three more. Because I’m focusing on it step by step, day by day, I don’t feel overwhelmed. Incorporating a spiritual meditation of some kind into each day helps tremendously. I leave a space using a little cloud with dots to jot down the most important thing I glean from these moments. It’s very calming and affirming.
My contemporary series will begin launching in September so I created a launch plan with tasks to be done each month for each book, release dates, promos, kind of a birds eye view.
Have you tried creating your own planner? I’d love to hear about it. If I’ve made you curious you can find dozens of books on the subject but here’s a rather inexpensive eBook I’ve found particularly helpful. Dot Journaling by Rachel Wilkerson Miller

Get Destiny Paramortals series by @liviaquinn now on all #ebook stores

Destiny now back on all e-retailers.

I have good news for my readers in Canada, the UK, Australia and other places around the world! I'm happy to announce that my readers can once again get my entire paranormal series on all ebook stores for Ibooks, Kobo, Nook and Kindle.

Just between you and me, I tried the Amazon exclusive route for ninety days but I couldn't get past the idea that many of my readers who read on other readers than a kindle or purchase books on other stores besides Amazon, could no longer get my books. Having my books available to anyone who wants to read them is what matters to me most. This includes libraries and subscription services so check out all the links on my books page or see the links below for each of the six books in the series.

The Destiny Paramortals is the continuing saga of Sheriff Jack Lang and Tempest Pomeroy and the rest of Destiny as they grow into their Paramortal potential.

It all started with. . .

Former Navy pilot and police detective Jack Lang left Memphis hoping to leave big city life, crime, and his crazy ex behind. He discovered a small town called Destiny and figured this quiet, no drama town would be the perfect place to raise his teenage daughter. He must have been reading the description the Chamber published in the tourist brochures. See... Destiny has secrets and humans aren't privy to them, even their new top law enforcement officer, Sheriff Jack Lang.

Excerpt
“I’d really like to see you all dressed up.” Jack said.
That surprised me. He placed his hands on my shoulders. “And then I’d like to peel it all off, one layer at a time.” That didn’t. My blood heated and my breath hitched on the next intake.
“Um, Houston, we have a problem.” I looked down, waving my arms.  “This is as close to dressy as I have in my closet.”
He looked away then eyebrow lifting, he turned back with a smile. “I, uh, took care of that. I hope you’re not offended. You can still say no, but I was hoping you’d agree. When I was in Aurora’s back room, I saw a dress, and when I thought about you in it…” he saw my expression change... “No, wait.”
I really wasn’t okay just the way I was. He had to dress me up to make me look better.
“That’s not what I meant, Sweetheart. As awesome as you are in shorts and ankle work boots and no makeup, I can only imagine you’d be the most beautiful woman at that ball all decked out.”
My jaw dropped. “Wow, you’re good. Does that silver tongue get twisted up very often?”
He looked serious and…hurt. “You should know me well enough to know when I’m serious, even if expressing it is new to me. Having a semi-normal person to care about in my life is…”
“Huh, you’d better shut up while you’re ahead.” I put my arms around his neck and smiled up at him. “Here's a tip. When you can’t say what you mean or you think you’ve screwed up, just kiss me. You do that really well.”
His mouth covered mine softly, thoughtfully, at first, and then he proved he was an expert at expressing himself with a kiss. His tongue swept into my mouth, dueling with mine, and I lost all track of where we were until a truck coasted by and some teenagers whooped.
A voice called out, “Hey, isn’t that the girl’s basketball coach?” and someone whistled. “Way to go, Sheriff.”
He placed his chin against my forehead. I could feel the thrum of his heart beating in unison with mine.
“So, about Saturday.” I said. “I’ve got this thing.”
He leaned back looking down at me, the warmth in his eyes dimming. “Look—”
“It’s got to do with River.”
I couldn’t say, I have it on good authority that there will be a Para-moon this weekend. I know you never heard of it, but that’s because you’ve never heard of Paramortals, and I can’t tell you because you not only wouldn’t want to take Cinderella to the ball, but you’d probably run freaking screaming if you even got a glimpse of me in Tempestaerie mode.
I settled for, “I have a feeling if we don’t find my brother by next weekend, it’ll be too late.”
His gaze softened once again and he took my hand. “And I have one—call it a policeman’s instinct—that says we’re going to find him by then.” He wrapped his arms around me and I snuggled into his warm strength. The man was a rock. Nothing rattled him.
Still, he was a human rock.
“I’ve never been asked to a dance before,” I said. I desperately wanted to go.
He must have seen the longing on my face because he said, “I won’t go without you. The Mardi Gras ball is just an excuse to see you in that dress. If things don’t work out for us Saturday—we’ll make it another time, soon.”
He walked me to my truck. He leaned toward me and my eyes drifted shut, expecting another of those mind-numbing kisses but he tilted his head, looking off. “What’s that noise?”
I didn’t hear anything.
“Is your truck running?” he asked, releasing me and walking to the back of my truck.
“No,” I said, curious. And then I heard it. “Er, Jack, it’s nothing—” I flushed.
“Well, it’s something. Sounds like it’s coming from inside that trash bag in the bed of your truck.”
“Uh, yeah, it is.” My face colored. “Just some… things I bagged up the other night when I was house-cleaning.” And frustrated, I thought. I crossed my fingers that he'd let it go.
He didn’t. He grinned at me, lifting the bag to his ear, pretending to try to deduce the evidence. Then his eyes glinted, holding a burning promise. “You might want to save those batteries. Toss everything else.” He set the bag down next to us in the pickup bed, still vibrating.

“You won’t be needing it.”

Here's the taste of the series in the blurb from the first book.

Destiny – is it Mayberry or Middle Earth?  Welcome to Destiny where vampires, dragons, shifters and a family of Djinn live along side humans.

Ages ago a pact was made between all the supernatural species to protect weaker creatures and the humans. Just don't tell the humans.

My name is Tempest Pomeroy, and my human job is delivering the mail in Destiny, Louisiana. I’m also a Paramortal like my family, or I’m supposed to be. If I didn’t have a few little talents, I’d think I was adopted. It’s just two weeks until Mardi Gras, and I’m having a bad day. That’s like saying Katrina dropped a little rain on the Gulf Coast.

First, River’s amphora went missing—that’s genie bottle to you mere-mortals—and on my first delivery, a handsome scantily clad doctor triggered some sort of hallucination, with just a touch. Pheromones? Then, one of my customers had a stroke while reading me the riot act over a piece of mail, but I saved the old grouch with a zap of my Zeus juice! It was the first time I’d actually called my power on purpose, and Destiny’s hunky new sheriff almost saw me use my magic—big no-no—when he responded to the call.

He showed up again when the local florist filed a complaint against me for dropping a seventy-five pound box on his foot. Yeah, I did it, but it was kind of an accident. He put his hand where it didn’t belong and my fingers… sorta... slipped.

Then, if you can believe it, things got worse. I discovered a dead body in the clubhouse and rescued my brother’s amphora from a locker, bashing it in with a Greg Norman wedge. And who showed up again? You guessed it.

I’ve denied my heritage for too long. Now, my brother is missing, my mother’s out of pocket as usual, and the sheriff and my ex-lover are squaring off like yard dogs staking a claim over a poodle. I am no one’s poodle. Is it any wonder I’m calling this the worst M.A.L.E day of my life? My friend Aurora says all the chaos is a sign of my quickening Tempestaerie power, and more changes are on the wind.

Oh, and the sheriff? He thought he’d settled in a normal small safe town to raise his teenage daughter—like Mayberry?! We’ll see how that turns out… Things better settle down soon, or our former Navy pilot sheriff is going to take the first F-18 out of Middle Earth.

Enter Destiny. You won't want to leave.

Warning: If you’re looking for standalones, the Destiny Paramortals series is not for you. This is a series with recurring characters on their Paramortal journey. They get their HEAs, but not in book 1. You’ll find dragons, sexy shifters, vampires, tempestaeries and djinn and other Paramortals with surprises at every turn. Emotional, quirky and fun.

Read them in order.

HEAs and HFNs in #Romance #IARTG

If you’re t a romance writer you’re probably not familiar with the acronym HEA, It stands for happily ever after. There’s a another one that’s gained prominence since the rise in popularity of continued series. HFN or happily for now.

Many have criticized the romance genre for being formulaic and they can be. I remember one historical author years ago who wrote some of the first books in which the heroine became intimate with more than one ‘hero’. Her plots were structure so similarly that you could literally do a find and replac e for the names and setting and have nearly the same book.  Still they were popular, because of the HEA.

These days because ofgroups like RWA and strong online support and education , most serious writers in the genre have studied the craft of writing – plotting, characterization, dialogue, Goal Motivation and Conflict… the same elements and standards as other genres. But the one thing that sets them apart is HEA and HFN. Romance is dependent upon either a happy ending or a satisfactory ending with hanging threads, usually in the fantasy sub-genres. There is always a knowledge, not a wonder, that things will eventually turn out okay for the heroine and hero.

In Storm Crazy, book one of my Destiny Paramortals series based on Storm Lake,  things get pretty dicey at the end with a cliffhanger thread but the reader doesn’t have to worry that I’ll kill offo the hero or heroine. I’m not George R.R. Martin and this isn’t mainstream fantasy or literary fiction. It’s romance.

What they get to enjoy though is a series of books where the characters’ arcs and the paranormal aspects of Destiny grow and new characters enter the picture.  I just released the Storm Lake box set 1(Destiny books 1-3) with book 4 completing one of the story arcs in June. No worries, the main characters will live, but doesn’t anything in life remain exactly the same???? We’ll see.

G is for Glasgow #A2ZChallenge

PictureKelvingrove, Glasgow I'll be leaving the wilds of Louisiana for the beautiful Isle Scotland on August 24. My girlfriend and I have been dreaming of another trip to Scotland since I visited in 1998 and didn't want to come home.

In the early nineties, we got hooked on the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. We both have lots of Scottish and some Irish background, doesn't everyone? There's have a great great great? grandfather William Wallace and a mess of Elliotts, an infamous border raider clan. And the Campbells are represented in the Storm Lake series in Campbell Green with Mystic Campbell. "To say I love everything Scottish," to quote Tempe in Storm Crazy, "would be like saying Katrina dumped a bit of rain on New Orleans."

One of the most exciting parts of my trip will happen on my first day in Glasgow – I'll get to meet two dear friends, Michael J Malone and Bill Kirton who also happen to be writers - crime writers. I get a blissful kick just thinking about it. Sometimes the Internet is too cool to fathom, isn't it?

I've yet to meet a couple of my other writer friends from Canada but one day... the great thing about conferences and regional events is the opportunities to network with friends that you've only met online.

Have you met special friends on the Internet that you have never met?

If you're blogging with the A toZ Challenge leave a comment and I'll check yours out too.
